Title: Response of soft colloids to crowding in bulk and at the interface.

The response of soft colloids to crowding depends sensitively on the particles’ compressibility. Microgel suspensions provide model systems often studied to better understand the properties of soft materials and complex fluids from the formation of colloidal crystals to the flow of viruses, blood, or platelet cells in the body. Large spherical microgels, when embedded in a matrix of smaller microgels, have the unique ability to spontaneously deswell to match their size to that of the microgel composing the matrix. In contrast to hard colloids, this self-healing mechanism allows for crystal formation without giving rise to point defects or dislocations. Here, I will show how we combined neutron and x-ray scattering to understand the role of charges and particle anisotropy on this self-healing mechanism. Furthermore, I will present the effect of crowding on the structural and viscoelastic properties of microgel monolayer studded combining interfacial rheology and neutron reflectometry.
